Diane & Joe – An Autumn Engagement at Patterson’s Fruit Farm

Autumn has finally arrived, which means it’s time for lots of engagement sessions. For Diane and Joe’s engagement session, our timing could not have been more perfect. We chose to visit a couple spots, including Patterson’s Fruit Farm and Squires Castle, both of which are local favorites. And the results turned out wonderfully. The trees, rich with color, made for an amazing backdrop. Plus, I always love shooting in apple orchards.

The story of Diane and Joe’s relationship is certainly a long one. Their relationship goes way, way back. They started dating in high school when they both worked at the local grocery store. Since that time, they have been rather inseparable. That longevity gives them a lot of history and comfort together. A comfort that really comes through in the images below.

Even better is how they got engaged. They had set sail on a cruise with family when the time was right. Looking for the best time possible, Joe chose the last day of the cruise to propose. Of course, Diane said yes, which brings us to today. Like the first photo below, they have a long and wonderful path ahead. For today, I certainly hope you enjoy the highlights below, all lovingly captured on film. Enjoy!

Michelle & Adam – Sunset Engagement in Kirtland

Timing is a fickle thing. One wrong step, and you miss the perfect window. Timing can be particularly important for sunset engagement sessions. Too early, and you miss the most amazing blue-gold-peach colored light. Too late and you run out of light before the session is over. For Michelle and Adam’s engagement session in Kirtland, the timing was perfect. You know – that rare kind of perfect.

We met rather late for the spring, and didn’t start shooting until after 6:00pm. As we strolled through Holden Arboretum, we chatted about their wedding and how they first met. Occasionally, we would stop for a few frames. We even climbed into a make-shift tree house, not pictured below. Then we would walk and chat some more. We visited my favorite willow, and a deep stand of spruce pine . All the while, the sun sank lower in the sky. The tones slowly went from raw daylight, through golden yellow, to orange crush.

By the end of the session, we had left Holden Arboretum and reached Patterson Fruit Farm. Just as the colors peaked in vibrancy, we walked down into the apple orchard. The sunset had finally reached my favorite, peachy colors. A this point, we had only 15 minutes to wrap up their all-film engagement session. Then before I knew it, the light was gone for the day. There was no need to go any further. Holding the film in my hand, I knew I had captured Michelle and Adam’s personality and love. I happily smiled to myself as I realized it was perfect.

And they deserve perfect. Michelle and Adam are great people and great together, which I think you will see below. So feel free to enjoy some rather special highlights –

Before I depart, some quick notes for the photographers among us. The above is all-film and 90% shot on a Contax 645. I was also lugging around a Nikon 35mm. The film is Fuji 400h in the Contax, and Portra 160 in 35mm. Most often, I shoot heavily back-lit. However, if you find yourself running out of light at sunset, turn around and bathe the subject in the sun. A sundown, the intensity of the light is low enough not to cause unwelcome squinting. See the last one as an example. Happy shooting!

Megan & Pezh – A Perfect Autumn Engagement Captured on Film

How they found me, I do not know. It’s actually kind of strange. Megan lives out of state and they are getting married in her home town, Pensacola, Florida. Still to this day, I’m not entirely certainly why they wanted to do an engagement session at Holden Arboretum, near Cleveland. This is a healthcare city, and they’re both doctors. Maybe they met here. Truthfully, it matters not. The session could not have come out better, and at the height of autumn.

We met at Holden Arboretum near the visitor’s center. My lovely wife Brooke decided to join in, mostly so she could see Holden for the first time. We’ve been members forever, but this was her first chance to visit. Megan and Pezh arrived with their lovely dogs and a friend to handle to pooches. With Megan and Pezh being dermatologists, I’m sure you won’t be surprised to learn their dogs are named after topical ointments. No seriously, one is named Retin-A. I kid you not. As always, we started off with the furry friends, who were perfectly stars. After the dogs had their moment, it was down to just Megan and Pezh.

We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around Holden, stopping here and there to capture a few frames on film. It just seemed like the perfect day for an all-film engagement session. We chatted about their current work and their upcoming wedding. We share a lot in common. For instance, I’m from a deeply Southern family. My mama has retired to Pensacola, where Megan and Pezh will have their wedding in November. At this point, I know Pensacola pretty well. It’s a gorgeous Spanish-era city and the perfect setting for a wedding.

We even took the time to jump over to Patterson Fruit Farm to capture some rather special photos. On the list was a photo for their Save the Date card. We also wanted a quick photo among the apple trees, all of which you can enjoy below.

Megan and Pezh really got lucky. The day of their engagement session was also the height of the fall color. Every leaf was so saturated with color that they looked to glow. We had to celebrate a little. The last frame took three tries, but we got it. That is all for today, but stop back soon. More sessions are coming.
