Katie & Matt – Morning Engagement at Craighead Farm

Katie was responsible for finding the location, and it was perfection! She hunted, called contacts and finally secured access to Craighead Farm in Novelty, Ohio. The farm breeds champion hunting and jumping horses. Fortunately, I also had a small connection to the farm. While I’m not an equestrian, my family is filled with passionate hunters and jumpers. When I arrived, I was lucky enough to bump into the owner. We shared a few stories and then I met up with Katie and Matt.

They were waiting by the barn. It had been some time since we had seen each other. We first met while they were visiting Ohio. Today, they were back in town from Chicago for their engagement session and wedding shower. As we wandered the grounds, we chatted about their upcoming wedding, how they met, and life in Chicago. I’m a former Chicagoan, so I was keen to learn what has changed.

Needless to say, the session went perfectly. Every turn around the farm reveals a cool new spot. I think I lost it completely when I spotted the dock hanging over the water.

Below are just a few personal favorites.

At the front of the property is a beautifully ornate English garden. Katie and Matt looked simply perfect under the dogwood.

We spotted the willow tree from across the pond. It was smaller than I first thought, but everyone looks good under a willow tree.

I like ending on a last moment of fun. That’s all for today. For Katie and Matt, I simply can’t wait for your wedding. It’s going to be awesome. Check back soon as we will have many more weddings and engagement sessions coming.

Katie & Jonah – Vintage-Inspired Wedding in North Canton

Storms passed through the night before and cooled the summer heat. For weeks the temperature had been in the 90’s, but it cooled off just in time. Kate and Jonah’s wedding had finally arrived. A couple week’s prior, I went down to Walsh University for some early scouting. At the time, it was hard to see a wedding taking place at the University. Sure, Walsh University and North Canton are pretty, but it just didn’t seem to fit. On the day of Kate and Jonah’s wedding, we arrived early and were immediately met with a big surprise.

Michael and I visited the Hoover Park Banquet center before we started the day. As we stood there, we looked like a couple of mouth-breathers. This couldn’t be the same place I had seen weeks prior! The whole place was complete transformed. Gone were the bland picnic tables and debris. In their place were long tables decorated ornately with white table clothes, silver chargers, unique flowers, herbs and hand-made table numbers. The place had come alive. Even the outside was refreshed. Kate and Jonah had brought in enough landscaping plants to fill the entire grounds. After we picked ourselves up off the floor, we left to start the day.

The rest of the day would be met with similar awe. Kate’s dress was gorgeous and reminded me of the dress my wife wore on our wedding day. The solarium at her parents house was the perfect place for prep. And the entire bridal party was composed on dear friends and family. And these were fun, happy friends. The kind of people I could call my friends.

Altogether, the wedding was about a surprisingly gorgeous vintage wedding design, close friends, kind family and love. Lots and lots of love. It could not have been more perfect.

And below are just a few personal favorites –

The light streaming through the solarium was gorgeous, and Kate’s wedding dress even more so.

With such a great bridal party, the portraits were more fun than work. The shaded setting was nice as well.

Really these two would look amazing anywhere, but the solitude of a crushed limestone trail through a forest seemed the perfect place for bridal portraits.

Right from the entrance, you could see how detailed the wedding reception would be. Landscaping plants lined to pathway to the reception, with candles scattered throughout.

My personal favorite – the home-grown herbs for wedding guests to take home. I have some growing in my garden today. Heck, I made gnocchi with the thyne last night.

Sarah & Mike – Holden Arboretum Engagement in Kirtland

When planning an engagement session, I always ask clients about locations special to them. For example, a place they often visit together, where they had their first date, or where they were engaged. Whenever possible, these locations are then included in engagement sessions. For Sarah and Mike, the answer was immediate and obvious – it just had to be Holden Arboretum. Holden is a favorite place of mine. In fact, we are members. More importantly though, it’s special for Sarah and Mike as well.

When we first met, Sarah told me about how Mike proposed. Mike worked with Sarah’s father to identify Holden as the perfect spot. He created a trail through the arboretum, lined with lights and candles. The edges of the trail was dotted with photographs of Sarah and Mike together. At the end stood Mike, waiting under a pergola. To be clear, it was a pergola, and not an arbor 😉

Sarah was led to the path and followed it from there. At the end was Mike, a ring, and a big happy YES! So we just had to return to Holden. We had to stand under the pergola, visit the willow, and bathe in the evening sun. Afterwards, we decided to visit their home town. We dropped by downtown Chagrin Falls. We had some Jeni’s Ice Cream, wandered, chatted, and grabbed a few more portraits.

Below are just a few favorites, but it was hard to choose. Everything from that evening just seemed so perfect.

Above and below, under the willow tree, again. It’s strange having a relationship with a tree. I’ve come to love it. Everyone who knows Holden knows this tree. Maybe I should give it a name.

Ahhh…Jeni’s is the best ice cream ever. I’m so looking forward to seeing Jeni again this Thursday.

By this time, the sun was setting. Below, Sarah really looks like a model. They are such an amazing couple together.

The last one is a little different – cool, muted and dim. I love the more subdued tones. I also love the feeling of anticipation. That’s all for today. As always, more coming soon.
