Chicago Engagement Session – Katie & Brian

When the winter wind whips, Chicago is the last place I want to be. At least, that’s what I tell myself. In truth, I’ll make a trip home to Chicago anytime I have the opportunity. Thanks to Katie & Brian, I had opportunity to return once more to the city I love. A winter Chicago engagement session might seem odd, but it makes perfect sense for Katie and Brian. After all, they’re Cleveland wedding will be in the December, 2016. While it may have been a bit chilly, I thrilled with how the photos turned out.

Initially we met at Chicago’s Rockery building, only to find out that we couldn’t shoot there without prior permission and paying a huge fee. So we headed out into downtown Chicago, stopping initially at the old Union station. We simply worked along the river for the rest of their engagement session. Starting from Union Station, we worked north to River Walk and then south to the Chicago Museum of Art.

By the end of their Chicago engagement session, we were all a little bit cold. After some hugs goodbye, we all hoped in cabs and set off across Chicago. I might have stopped at The Gage for a quick Manhattan (I highly recommend it). Below are some highlights from their wintery Chicago engagement session in downtown, all captured on film. Hope you enjoy.

Denver Engagement Session – Britta & Nick

It started as just a small idea. After meeting Britta and Nick at a friend’s wedding, we quickly booked their wedding and started to talk about engagement session locations. “What do you think about doing a Denver engagement session,” I asked while talking to Britta and Nick on the phone. Like so many clients, they had not thought about a destination engagement session. We spent the rest of the call talking about how to make it work. By the end of the call, the decision had been made. We would be doing a Denver engagement session.

Initially, we had planned for an autumn session in Vail, high up in the Rocky Mountains. Unfortunately, time and weather conspired against us. The fall color in the mountains had already come and gone by the day of Britta and Nick’s engagement session. Furthermore, the weather in the mountains called for rain. I had already arrived in Denver for the session, and I was staying with some family. Thankfully, family came to my rescue and started to suggest some great locations in the Front Range for the engagement session. After a quick chat with Britta and Nick, a new plan was in place. We would do their engagement session at Roxborough State Park in the Front Range, and then head to Washington Park in downtown Denver. The new plan also came with a bonus – great fall color and very warm temperatures.

I headed out to Roxborough very early. I wanted to take some extra time for scouting and to capture some scenery. Almost by plan, I was met by a funny, fury fellow at the park entrance. You’ll see him below. Not long after, Britta and Nick arrived. We then headed across the park and into a beautiful valley I had found earlier. Honestly, I cannot adequately describe the scenery. It was breathtaking. Of course, Britta and Nick were wonderful to work with as well. We ended the session at Washington Park, working around the lagoon and geese who were diligently mowing the lawn.

Afterwards, we all sat down at a nearby cafe for a glass of wine and a small bite to eat. At this point it began to hit me – Britta & Nick’s engagement photos were going to be amazing. I’ve included some highlights below. For Britta & Nick, I certainly can’t wait for the wedding. It’s going to be even better than Denver! Thank you so much for the adventure.

Cleveland Engagement Photography – Katie & Jeff

Our lives change in unforeseen ways. Change creeps in, at first imperceivable, like the movement of the sun across the sky. The movement is so slight, the initial change goes unnoticed. Once the change is fully developed, we see the full impact only in hindsight. At first, many of our most important life events creep silently into the room.

You could be out at a bar with friends with no particular expectations. Caught in a small group of companions surrounded by a larger group from some foreign college. Moving through the group, conversation after conversation, the change goes unnoticed at first. You meet some new people and chat for a while. Before long, you set off into the night for “midnight pancakes” with friends and some new acquaintances. The night ends plainly enough. Unnoticed, your foot has already landed on a new path. A golden path that will change everything, but whose scintillation cannot yet be seen.

Flash-forward and you find yourself in a familiar place. The path has lead you up a far away stream in a distant land, past Velma’s house, and deep into a jungle. This place is real and known, and not a metaphor at all. The guide who lead you there recedes into the darkness, leaving just the two of you swimming under the waterfall. The path started so long ago is now bright and plain to see; it’s scintillation manifested in the ring presented before you. The promise bound on this day, under that waterfall, becomes a promise to keep to the path – together and forever.

Before Katie and Jeff’s Cleveland engagement photography at the Museum of Art and Huntington Beach, they were kind enough to share their story with me, encapsulated loosely above. Below are just a few highlights from their gorgeous engagement session captured on film this autumn. I certainly hope you enjoy both the story and the images.
