Julia & Evan – Autumn Engagement at Huntington Beach

The timing was perfect. Just a few weeks prior I had met Julia for the first time to book her wedding. Julia and Evan really wanted an autumn engagement session to feature the fall color. We moved quickly and got their engagement session at Huntington Beach in Rocky River ready to go. I don’t think any of us expected the session to turn out so perfect.

When we arrived, I met Evan for the first time. Then, we all looked around and breathed in how perfect the day was. The evening sun was shining. The air crisp, but unseasonably warm. Truthfully, you hardly needed a sweater. Except for the fall color, the engagement session could have been shot in the summer. Of course Julia and Evan were perfect together as well.

They’re both new to the city, having moved here for their careers. Like anyone entering a new city, meeting new friends can be exceptionally difficult. They had both joined online communities to help smooth the tough transition. They were both looking for friendship, and found each other. I’d think they would both agree that they got so much more. Love sprang forth and they are due to be married very soon. And I mean very soon. Their Hyatt Arcade wedding will be in early April. I can’t wait for their wedding. Julia and Evan are awesome, and I know the wedding will be a smashing good time.

Below are just a few of my favorite highlights to enjoy.

That last frame is one of my all-time favorites. The even color produced by using all-film for this engagement session is just perfect.

Carolyn & Jason – A Snowy Winter Engagement Session at Holden Arboretum

It seemed like we’d been rescheduling this engagement session for weeks. The goal for Carolyn and Jason’s session was a nice wintery shoot with snow, but the weather wouldn’t cooperate. First it was bitterly cold, and I fell ill. Then it was too warm and there was no snow. Finally, we hit the jackpot. Not only was there snow, but the snow was actively falling during the entire session.

We met on a distant corner of the Holden Arboretum property. The Holden property is huge and I still haven’t seen it all. Carolyn and Jason introduced me to a new part – the horse stables. Carolyn keeps her lovely horse there and we wanted to include the entire family. The horse had been let out into the back fourty, so we had to fetch it from the field. Did you know that horses will come when called? Like the entire heard? I had no clue. With the horse rounded up, we started the session.

We spent time around the stables, capturing the animals as we chatted together. A snowball fight broke out more than once. We made sure to include their snowboarding gear, which is a favorite hobby for both Carolyn and Jason. Me? I’m just a knuckle-dragging two-planker, as Carolyn might say 😉 With the horse put to bed, we headed off to the core of the Holden property to make snow angels. All in all, it was a perfect winter engagement session.

Funny thing is, all the rescheduling echos their real engagement. Jason planned an elaborate scheme where he would surprise Carolyn with a ring while walking their dogs. For a few days, he kept inviting her on a dog walk, but she constantly declined. Finally, after a few attempts, they headed off to the park. While walking, Jason ran ahead to hide the ring under a special rock. He returned and slowly lead Carolyn to the ring. They were engaged in a quiet corner of North Chagrin Metroparks, with their dogs, their love, but no horse.

As you can see above, there was really no attempt to keep the snow off. All the snowball fights and angels made a beautiful mess. I’m really looking forward to Carolyn and Jason’s wedding later this year. Thankfully, there won’t be any snow, but there will be autumn leaves of gold, purple and ruby red.

PUBLISHED – Valentine’s Proposal Featured on 100 Layer Cake

In January, I found myself in Malibu, California for a very special purpose. Sure, I was escaping the cold weather, but I was also attending Caroline Tran’s Propel Workshop. Think of it as 10 photographers living, working, and shooting together for four days. It’s completely amazing. As part of the workshop, we did a very special Valentine’s Day themed proposal with Merrill & Tim. Today, I’m thrilled to announce that the session has been featured on 100 Layer Cake!

The feature includes photos from numerous amazing photographers, and some of my own. I’d like to offer a special thanks to Amanda and the group at 100 Layer Cake. Also, huge thanks to Wilmarose Orlanes of Lovely Jubilee. She styled the session and did an amazing job. Also, thanks to Caroline Tran and the team from Skybox Events. Caroline lead a wonderful workshop and it was all organized by Ngoc at Skybox.

I’ll have more coverage from the workshop coming soon, and many more images to share. For now, enjoy a couple highlights below. For complete details and more photos from the session, check out this separate post.
